Clearly, my drawing matches Caliban's description of typing on a keyboard as opposed to writing a letter using pen and paper. In fact, his finger is hovering over the "backspace" key as a symbol of control over the digital space. However, my drawing is an even more modernized version of Caliban - during my Caliban poetry paper in semester 1, I wrote about the "spiralled" progress of Caribbean people. As technology improves, the spiral progresses forward, and since Brathwaite wrote "Letter Sycorax," technology has improved significantly. These improvements enable people like Caliban, who feel that they must conform to their oppressor's language, to feel more comfortable communicating with the nuances of their nation-language. To demonstrate Caliban's even greater command of his means of communication with his mother, I incorporated three features. Firstly, I added the voice-to-text feature. Brathwaite commented that typing on computers is closest to speaking in one's own nation-language, and the voice-to-text feature enhances this. By recording users' voices and translating them into words, voice-to-text enables unique phrases and sounds to be communicated (although, voice-to-text has not advanced to the point that terms unique to nation-languages can be spelled in the way they are intended to be spelled. For this, users must adjust the spelling themselves.) Second, I incorporated the the 'X' that is characteristic of Brathwaite's "Sycorax Video Style." These days, technology is often customizable; with a digital pad that can be animated and adjusted to fit users, Caliban is able to incorporate his own visual style to his writing at any time. Finally, I incorporated an "emoji" keyboard. Like Caliban's 'X', emojis are a visual tool that allow users to demonstrate their emotion and style without using additional words. In "Letter Sycorax," visuals are equally important to words, and thus, emojis enable Caliban to communicate with his mother more effectively without compromising his nation-language.
In my drawing, Caliban has not really lost. However, he has gained a greater level of control over his means of communication and command over his digital space. In fact, he continues to clutch a pencil in between his fingers as he types on a keyboard. He maintains the ability to draft his ideas on a paper format, but he is able to enhance communication in nation-language using his modern, high-tech keyboard and computer.
